Le Roi Roger (1926) arrive sur la scène de l’Opéra de Paris, treize ans après sa création française, en version de concert, par Charles Dutoit et l’Orchestre national de France. L’opéra de Karol Szymanowski, chef-d’œuvre du symbolisme en musique, est précédé d’une réputation de luxuriance sonore – l’orchestre évoque Debussy autant que Strauss ou Scriabine – mais aussi de celle d’ouvrage difficile à mettre en scène. Reprenant le schéma des « mystères » d’inspiration sacrée, il ne présente pas une intrigue au sens classique du terme mais insiste sur la pesante atmosphère, toute méditerranéenne, qui est celle de la lutte de deux fois dans la Sicile du xiie siècle. Krzysztof Warlikowski, dont la production de L’Affaire Makropoulos vient tout juste de quitter la scène de l’Opéra Bastille, signe cette dernière production de Gérard Mortier en tant que directeur de l’Opéra.
