Le silence et la peur, qui confirme le goût de David Geselson pour les intersections, les rencontres, les télescopages, mêle le récit de la vie de Nina Simone et la question des héritages de l’histoire coloniale. Pour brasser une matière riche et dense, aux facettes multiples, David Geselson a constitué une distribution française, anglaise et américaine, noire et blanche. « Je vis entre deux mondes. Le monde noir et le monde blanc. Je suis Nina Simone la star, et je ne suis pas elle, je suis une femme ». Ces paroles célèbres que Geselson place très tôt dans la bouche de son personnage disent toute la difficulté et l’intérêt de la démarche élaborée par le metteur en scène : il s’agit de chercher ce qui par nature échappe. Impossible en effet de dire qui était Nina Simone. Pas cette militante au verbe haut, descendante d’indiens et d’esclaves, qui flirte avec la violence. Pas cette femme énamourée d’un homme qui la bat. Pas cette chanteuse à succès qui se bat pour chanter ses combats. Le spectacle se déroule suivant un tuilage de toutes les dimensions du personnage qui s’additionnent, se télescopent, s’enchevêtrent dans des va-et-vient entre les époques de sa vie. Et ce sont tous les cahots d’une époque qui font entendre leur résonance.
