Il est temps de se retirer de la vie, pense le personnage du Solitaire de Ionesco. Un héritage inattendu permet à cet homme pas encore quarantenaire d’abandonner un travail médiocre de bureau. « Il ne lui reste plus désormais qu’à essayer de goûter la vie, c’est-à-dire, pour lui, de faire l’apprentissage de la mort. » Il achète un appartement quelconque et déjeune tous les jours au même restaurant. Sa contemplation du monde le conduit à s’étonner du comportement des êtres autour de lui. Pourquoi s’agitent-ils pour des opinions, des goûts et des passions ? Sa vie à lui est rythmée par le beaujolais de midi et demi et par la venue de la femme de ménage le matin. D’où vient cependant la grâce qui auréole l’existence de ce Solitaire ? « La recherche de l’oubli, la nostalgie du savoir que nous n’aurons jamais, le sentiment également fort de notre infirmité et du miracle de toute chose », voilà ce qui donne à cet anti-héros une dimension mystique, un rien pascalienne. Cette langue « simple » à la force dramatique et aux allures de conte moderne est portée par l’immense acteur François Marthouret, l’adaptateur de ce roman singulier.
