Si cette comédie est si longuement applaudie, c’est parce que Stanislas Grassian, qui est aussi acteur dans la pièce, parvient à créer un équilibre subtil et visuellement très abouti entre tous les personnages, un équilibre qui n’est pas dû à une quelconque sophistication ( la scénographie est simple et efficace) mais bien au placement des corps dans l’espace autant qu’aux voix, à une fine caractérisation de chacun des protagonistes, et dans une moindre mesure à l’accompagnement musical au piano, inégal mais globalement plutôt réussi. L’intrigue tient en quelques mots. Dans la bourgade de Mordassov, l’arrivée du Prince K., sénile mais riche, provoque un vent de folie, les dames de la ville voulant attirer l’illustre vieillard chez elles, afin qu’il épouse leur fille. La première “pipelette“ d’entre elles, Maria Alexandrovna, habile, déterminée et pragmatique, pense donc unir ce « débris de notre aristocratie » et sa fille Zina, belle et vertueuse, elle-même amoureuse du jeune Vassia, sur le point de mourir. C’est le maladroit Pavel Mosgliakov, qui rêve d’épouser sa fille et l’a demandé en mariage, qui lui a donné cette idée. L’adaptation est écrite de son point de vue, celui d’un homme somme toute fragile et influençable, touchant et peu rusé.
Corps branlant de marionnette
Ecrite en 1857 au sortir du bagne, la comédie satirique et grinçante, portrait au vitriol d’une société avide d’argent au point de négliger ses enfants et de se démener frénétiquement pour s’approprier les biens et le titre d’un vieil homme à la raison vacillante, oscille entre tragique et comique, réalisme et onirisme, burlesque et grotesque. Quelques échos au Songe shakespearien se font même entendre, et il est vrai qu’ici le réel se lit très différemment selon les personnages. Celui autour duquel tout le monde gravite bien malgré lui, c’est le fameux Prince, tout de blanc vêtu, masqué et perruqué, au corps branlant de marionnette ou de pantin désarticulé. Aussi fragile que ridicule, et théâtralement formidable ! C’est Marco Candore qui l’interprète avec jubilation, tandis qu’autour de lui le manège pitoyable et effréné des candidats à la richesse se déchaîne. La seule figure qui échappe à la mesquinerie généralisée, c’est celle de la jeune, droite et belle Zina. Le ballet est finement orchestré, dans la très belle salle boisée du théâtre de l’Epée de Bois, sans sièges de velours mais très chaleureuse…
