Quelle énigme que l’emprise qu’exerce le scélérat dévot Tartuffe sur Orgon, chef de famille aveuglé au point de vouloir lui céder la main de sa fille et ses biens ! On reconnaît là le génie insolent de Molière, et il n’est guère étonnant que la « méchante comédie » fut interdite en 1664 sous la pression de l’Eglise, avant d’être autorisée en 1669 dans sa nouvelle mouture en cinq actes par le roi Louis XIV. Bien des metteurs en scène l’ont explorée, parfois actualisée, et il est vrai qu’aujourd’hui, à l’heure où de jeunes gens se transforment en machines à tuer par adhésion à une idéologie haineuse, cette question d’un embrigadement absolu résonne tristement. « Cette comédie est une satire métaphysique : Molière nous parle de Dieu et du désir charnel. Tartuffe n’est pas un salaud, c’est l’Antéchrist, et Orgon n’est pas un pauvre type mais un fanatique dangereux. » confie Michel Fau, qui met en scène ce « vertige baroque » et interprète Tartuffe, révélateur de la discorde et de monstrueux dysfonctionnements. Il est heureux d’avoir à ses côtés des comédiens chevronnés et dans le rôle d’Orgon Michel Bouquet, son professeur au Conservatoire, un immense acteur qui excelle magistralement à mettre à jour les nuances et les ambiguïtés de ses personnages.
