Auteur de 26 opéras, Gian Carlo Menotti (1911-2007) est aujourd’hui peu représenté sur les scènes lyriques françaises. On se réjouit donc d’autant plus que ce compositeur, fondateur du festival des Deux Mondes à Spolète en 1958, héritier de la grande tradition lyrique italienne, notamment celle de Puccini, mais aussi influencé par la musique d’Hollywood, soit programmé à l’Opéra de Toulon. Deux de ses œuvres, composées à dix ans d’intervalle, permettent de mieux cerner l’inventivité et la palette du compositeur. Avec l’opéra bouffe en un acte Amélia va au bal, créé à Philadelphie en 1937, Menotti lorgne du côté du vaudeville à l’italienne, tandis qu’avec son autre opéra bouffe Le Téléphone, créé en 1947 à New York, il parle (déjà) des nouvelles technologies s’immisçant dans les relations amoureuses ! Un concentré d’humour et de rythme confié à la mise en scène de la jeune Sylvie Laligne et à la baguette de Jurjen Hempel.
