D’un fait divers sordide – une femme qui tue son mari, le dépèce et jette les morceaux dans des trains de marchandises qui passent sous un viaduc près de chez elle –, Marguerite Duras avait tiré une pièce de théâtre, L’Amante anglaise, pour tenter de comprendre le pourquoi de cet assassinat que son auteure elle-même avouait ne pas comprendre. Prolongeant le geste de l’écrivaine, Pierre-Marie Baudoin conçoit Le Théâtre de l’Amante anglaise, un spectacle où il propose une triple enquête : pour le spectateur, pour les acteurs et pour les personnages. Ce faisant, il souhaite « expérimenter un rapport au réel qui n’est pas uniquement la représentation du réel : en offrant un spectacle du réel, nous souhaitons en dépasser sa compréhension rationnelle. Il permet aussi une expérience émotionnelle », explique le metteur en scène. Sa démarche s’inscrit dans celle de sa compagnie, le Théâtre D.L.R2 qu’il a fondée en 2017 et qui vise, dans les formes proposées, à inclure les spectateurs dans un dispositif pour leur permettre d’établir un lien entre la pièce représentée et ceux qui l’ont écrite.
