On ne s’étonne pas que Britten, qui entendait refonder l’art lyrique avec l’économie de moyens qu’impliquait un monde en ruines, ait puisé dans deux nouvelles, aussi concises que poétiques, pour deux de ses opéras. S’inspirant de Henry James, il a composé un Tour d’écrou où le suspense le dispute à la finesse musicale. L’Opéra de Lorraine en propose une nouvelle production sous la direction de Bas Wiegers avec une mise en scène d’Eva-Maria Höckmayr, plus connue en Allemagne et en Suisse que sur les scènes lyriques françaises. Thomas Mann a également donné l’occasion à Britten de composer une Mort à Venise raffinée et mélancolique – son ultime opéra. L’Opéra national du Rhin le revisite dans une mise en scène par le duo Jean-Philippe Clarac et Olivier Deloeuil, désormais très demandés sur les scènes internationales pour leur actualisation des ouvrages lyriques, sous la direction de Jacques Lacombe.
