Créé en 1954, Le Tour d’écrou est l’opéra de chambre de Benjamin Britten qui a la plus grande force dramatique. Cela tient au livret, fidèlement adapté de la nouvelle d’Henry James, histoire de revenants aux accents freudiens marqués, amplifiés encore par le traitement instrumental et vocal qu’en fait le compositeur, entre sensualité et terreur. C’est ainsi l’une des rares réussites absolues dans le genre de l’opéra fantastique. Jean-Luc Tingaud, qui avait montré sa grande sensibilité pour la musique anglaise avec le superbe Riders to the Sea de Vaughan-Williams (repris à l’Athénée en 2009) est à la tête de l’orchestre-atelier Ostinato. Le rôle de Peter Quint, écrit à l’origine pour Peter Pears, est tenu par David Curry, souvent entendu ces dernières années dans les productions de musicals au Théâtre du Châtelet.
