L’œuvre du compositeur et chef d’orchestre argentin (né en 1931 à Buenos Aires), géant musical de la deuxième moitié du XXè siècle, frappe par son foisonnement, sa vitalité et sa diversité. Il a aussi bien composé pour l’orchestre ou la scène, la voix et le piano, le cinéma et la radio. Deux de ses œuvres de théâtre musical sont aujourd’hui rassemblées au même programme sur la scène du Théâtre de l’Athénée et interprétées par l’ensemble 2 E 2 M. Le monologue Le Tribun ou Dix marches et neuf contretemps pour manquer la victoire date de 1978 et renvoie directement à la triste réalité politique sud-américaine des années 70. « Lorsque Kagel écrit Le Tribun, il dénonce bien sûr les dictateurs d’Amérique latine, les Pinochet, les Videla et autres Perón… explique Lacornerie. Comme Charles Chaplin dans Le Dictateur, il dénonce le fascisme par la parodie. Le grotesque reste en effet un élément essentiel, constitutif du fascisme ; c’est sa satisfaction à s’affirmer comme grotesque qui fait peur et qui fascine. Aujourd’hui, force est de constater qu’il n’y a pas à chercher bien loin, à l’intérieur comme à l’extérieur de nos frontières, pour trouver de dignes successeurs à ces tribuns… » poursuit-il. L’œuvre est conçue pour récitant, petit orchestre et un haut-parleur. Avec Bernard Bloch dans le rôle du tribun, qui signe aussi la traduction et l’adaptation. En deuxième partie de spectacle, les mêmes interprètes proposent Finale, « une pièce musicale ironique et pleine de vitalité, écrite par Kagel pour autocélébrer son cinquantième anniversaire. Elle met fin au règne du chef d’orchestre. » Amusé, Jean Lacornerie s’interroge : « Un contrepoint salutaire à l’avènement des commandeurs et des tribuns ? ».
