« Tartuffe femelle inverse qui s’avance pour le bien et la lumière, hypocrite princesse sous un masque mâle, deux fois double, elle veut séduire toute une maison pour faire triompher son règne de l’amour. » : c’est ainsi que le poète Michel Deguy dessine le portrait de Léonide, dans La machine matrimoniale ou Marivaux. Figure centrale du Triomphe de l‘amour, créé par les comédiens italiens en 1732, la princesse de Sparte use en effet avec grand art des mensonges et manipulations pour parvenir à ses fins justicières : héritière d’un trône usurpé par son oncle, elle s’introduit sous le nom de Phocion chez Hermocrate et Léontine, frère et sœur retirés dans une austère retraite philosophique qui élèvent Agis, descendant légitime du pouvoir. Eprise du beau jeune homme, Léonide veut le conquérir, non par son titre mais par sa personne, et lui restituer la couronne. « Le Triomphe de l’amour célèbre le surgissement de la vie dans un univers policé. » souligne Jacques Osinski, séduit par l’incroyable « effronterie » de cette femme qui mène la danse. Confiant le rôle à Aline Le Berre, le metteur en scène entend célébrer la légèreté et la vie, en laissant folâtrer ce formidable souffle de liberté et la moquerie ravageuse.
