Retrouver Ibrahim Maalouf au côté d’un orchestre symphonique n’a rien d’incongru. Le jazzman possède une solide formation classique, même s’il s’est assez tôt tourné vers d’autres formes d’expression musicale, plus directes, plus ouvertes à l’improvisation. De toute façon, le trompettiste possède cette capacité à faire un pas de côté, qui le situe toujours dans et au-dehors des mondes musicaux. Disons que pour lui les frontières sont faites pour être franchies, pour aiguiser la curiosité promise par ce qui se trame au-delà. Avec l’Orchestre national de France, dirigé par Johanna Malangré, le projet est d’essence classique puisqu’il s’agit d’un concerto (Symphonie pour trompette et orchestre). Cependant, lorsqu’il en commença la composition en 1998, Ibrahim Maalouf comptait introduire dans les couleurs de l’orchestre celle de la trompette en quart de ton, porteuse des harmonies de la musique moyen-orientale. Reprise à plus de vingt ans de distance en vue de cette création, l’œuvre devrait aujourd’hui porter la trace des multiples aventures musicales de son auteur.
