Depuis quinze ans, le trompettiste natif de Manchester creuse disque après disque le sillon de son originalité, marquée par le jazz des années 1970 mais aussi par les apports de la musique électronique. C’est encore dans cette esthétique border line que se situe son tout nouvel album, publié sur son propre label, Gondwana Records. « J’ai toujours été à la frontière du jazz, dit justement Halsall, je me suis toujours senti comme un outsider » insiste-t-il, comme pour se préserver des critiques les plus orthodoxes. C’est d’autant plus vrai avec An Ever Changing View, dont le répertoire s’est construit à partir de la collection de percussions que Matthew Halsall a glanée ces deux dernières années, grâce à laquelle il a généré des samples qui constituent le socle de chaque titre. « Je travaillais presque comme un DJ, ajoutant et retirant des éléments pour que les autres musiciens jouent par-dessus. » À la clef, une musique qui module entre méditation et improvisation, les deux piliers de ce que l’on nomme le spiritual jazz.
