Ecrit pour Alain Cuny, en 1989, par André Benedetto, Lear et son Fou n’a jamais été créée par l’ancien directeur du Théâtre des Carmes. Aujourd’hui, c’est sur la scène de ce théâtre que Jean-Claude Drouot s’empare de cette pièce dans laquelle il incarne un Lear retiré loin des hommes. « Benedetto trimballe le vieux bonhomme sur la lande, désemparé, maudit, berger fou des ouragans et des catastrophes, accompagné d’un humoriste implacable, son Fou, explique le comédien et metteur en scène. Lear sait qu’il a mal fait. Il ne sait pas pourquoi. Dans cette pièce, se joue en quelque sorte le procès de Lear par son Fou. Ce dernier interroge son maître sur l’erreur fatale qu’il a commise : avoir voulu à la fois conserver le pouvoir et être aimé comme un père… » Accompagné sur scène par Serge Le Lay, Jean-Claude Drouot souhaite rester fidèle à une « écriture ludique, vive, surprenante », une écriture qu’il juge « immédiatement nécessaire ».
