Pris dans la tempête qui dévaste la lande, Lear, cœur et raison perdus, erre et vitupère contre l’ingratitude de ses filles, pendant que son fou le protège et le guide. Le seul ami qui lui reste, après que le vieux roi a affligé tous les siens, est le dernier sincère et le dernier fidèle de cet extrémiste dément, adepte du tout ou rien. Fo, le fou, tire Li, le vieil aveugle qui n’a pas su voir quand il avait des yeux, sur un char dont la voile est gonflée par l’ouragan. « Flux, mouvements, petites bêtes qui remontent à fleur de peau. Je porte en moi un étrange voyage. Une ménagerie. Je porte ma propre fin au-dessus de ma tête, comme épée, comme parapluie. », dit Li-Lear, auquel Jean-Claude Drouot prête sa puissante carcasse. Le comédien et metteur en scène a choisi de monter « cette pièce toute neuve », écrite par André Benedetto pour lui-même et Alain Cuny, comme une immédiate nécessité. « Entrée en piste de deux clowns sublimes pas si tristes que ça », dont l’un fait le procès de l’autre, comme seule le peut la raison qui se sait folle, face à la folie qui se croit raisonnable…
