Louis Laine vit avec Marthe, sa jeune épouse française, dans la propriété de Thomas Pollock Nageoire, self made man américain et de sa femme, l’actrice Lechy Elbernon. Entre le Nouveau monde et l’Ancien, entre le couple mûr et fortuné et les deux jeunes gardiens de leurs biens, va se jouer un échange hasardeux, Thomas proposant à Louis de lui acheter sa femme. Louis accepte l’argent et tente de convaincre Marthe de le laisser partir, mais Lechy, qui est déjà la maîtresse du jeune homme, le menace de mort s’il met ses projets à exécution. « Le désir, l’argent, le besoin de liberté sont autant d’entraves à la possibilité de l’union et c’est cela qui me parvient dans l’une ou l’autre version » de cette pièce que Claudel écrivit à deux âges de sa vie, dit David Assaraf. Désirant réconcilier ces deux variantes autour du personnage de Marthe qui, dans la seconde version, « n’est plus la victime larmoyante qu’elle était autrefois, mais la femme forte confrontée à l’échec de son couple et à la menace de mort qui pèse sur l’être qu’elle aime », le jeune metteur en scène voit dans la pièce de Claudel une parabole sur l’angoisse existentielle qui saisit l’homme face à l’engagement et au prix à payer de sa liberté. Etre vivant, aimer et se donner ou demeurer libre, quitte à tout brader voire à tout vendre ? Tel est le drame des membres de ce quatuor dissonant, dont les aspirations et les voix se heurtent douloureusement de ne pas comprendre que la dualité est le dépassement des individualités plutôt que leur somme.
