À l’aube du vingtième siècle, sous la plume de Claudel qui écrit L’Échange, s’esquissent deux visions radicales de l’existence. L’ancien monde d’un côté, tourné vers les racines et le passé à travers deux figures symboliques : Marthe, enlevée de sa France paysanne par Louis Laine, un sauvageon américain de sang indien, représentant la mémoire d’un peuple. Face à eux, fraie le danger du nouveau monde avec un second couple antithétique désinvolte. La comédienne Elchy Elbernon fait du théâtre pour désennuyer l’homme ignorant, c’est la compagne de l’homme d’affaires Thomas Pollock Nageoire pour lequel le seul prix est celui de l’or : « Je suis tout, j’achète tout, je vends tout. » Le deal où l’on cède ce que l’on a – l’argent – moyennant contrepartie – Marthe, la femme « pure » – se fait entre Thomas Pollock et Louis Laine. Le premier, manipulateur expérimenté des valeurs, éprouve la joie du collectionneur qui échange son bien contre un autre qu’il juge plus estimable. Mais on ne joue pas avec Marthe, la rustre douce-amère, que le son de la voix humaine pénètre jusqu’au cœur.
Le verbe de Claudel est à son apogée, entêtant, envoûtant.
Thomas qui rêve toujours de partir refuse de remettre son âme entre les mains de son épouse : elle pourrait le sauver, l’enjoindre à se fixer puisqu’elle est « la terre d’exil, la terre de mort sur qui descend la pluie, vers qui toute créature s’incline… » Le verbe de Claudel est à son apogée, entêtant, envoûtant et vivace, au goût de terre et de fraîcheur âcre. Claudel fait un éloge du théâtre formulé par l’actrice. On réfléchit à ce qui est dit et montré sur la scène tandis que l’artiste entre dans l’âme du spectateur « comme dans une maison vide ». La scénographie de Beaunesne, enclin à la poésie, est soignée. Du bois de parquet, semblant de digue marine et avancée de la plage vers le public, un lit de fer et quelques chaises, une table sur laquelle se renverse la jeune Marthe qu’incarne la sensible Julie Nathan, tel un roseau qui se plie mais ne se rompt pas. Alain Libolt, en fieffé affairiste, donne tout le panache à son personnage baroque. Nathalie Richard, dame policée et corruptrice de la ville, est juste sans atteindre le grand art. Et Jérémie Lippmann, bon comédien, ne se libère pas de son propre rôle, silhouette un peu cabotine qui rappelle Denis Lavant. Manque à la mise en scène un supplément de rêve et de liberté, qui lui donnerait son envol.
