Décidément, la langue de Paul Claudel, et singulièrement L’Echange, monté à plusieurs reprises ces derniers mois, dans la première version comme ici ou alors dans la deuxième (1954), fascinent les metteurs en scène. « C’est moi-même qui suis tous les personnages, l’actrice, l’épouse délaissée, le jeune sauvage et le négociant calculateur », écrit-il dans une lettre à l’actrice Marguerite Moreno en 1900. Le Nouveau Monde américain, lieu radicalement différent et ouvert à toute perspective, est une toile de fond impressionnante (l’auteur vient d’y être nommé vice-consul). L’intrigue est simple, et la force du verbe dessine des personnages étonnamment profonds, liés par une redoutable “nécessité dramatique“.
