Après Le Misanthrope, les Fourberies de Scapin, après Tartuffe, Jean-Pierre Vincent retrouve Molière avec bonheur, et Auteuil pour la seconde fois, dans L’École des Femmes. Une pièce bouffonne et tragique qui s’achève avec l’anéantissement d’Arnolphe, le maître qui croyait s’approprier Agnès, sa pupille qu’il séquestre avec l’aide de ses deux nigauds de valets, Georgette (Michèle Goddet) et Alain (Charlie Nelson). Agnès n’a reçu aucune éducation, savamment maintenue dans l’ignorance et fermée à l’appel du monde, selon le bon vouloir magistral d’un père symbolique excessif qui la voudrait prendre pour épouse. Faire d’une femme sa chose et prendre appui sur sa fragilité, un rêve peu sage qui taraude plus d’un homme en mal de reconnaissance. Arnolphe, anti-héros de la comédie classique, est de ces hommes par-delà les continents et les religions, qui se servent de la femme pour asseoir une autorité faillible et illégitime. Il sait volontiers rire avec les jeunes blondins, au fait des mœurs citadines. Mais ces jeunes gens-là sont ses pires ennemis ; sa crainte est de se découvrir un jour cocu et dépossédé. « Épouser une sotte est pour n’être point sot », dit-il au sage Chrysalde (Bernard Bloch, majestueux).
L’amour donne de l’esprit aux filles
Le vaniteux préfère sa douce Agnès ( Lyn Thibault, boudeuse et décidée) à ces dangereuses intellectuelles, ces précieuses qui mettent le pouvoir magistral masculin en question. Horace (Stéphane Varupenne) est un séducteur en herbe que le barbon croise et qui a déjà croisé la belle à ses propres dépens. C’est le cri de victoire du trouble amoureux et du désir révélés à la jeune fille, une âme qui perd son innocence et gagne en identité : l’amour donne de l’esprit aux filles. Qu’Arnolphe aille au diable, conscient tardivement de son amour pour sa protégée, à laquelle il n’a même pas su plaire. Jean-Paul Chambas dresse sur la scène un décor champêtre avec seuil de porte et banc de jardin, une fresque de demeure rurale aux murs rougis avec en haut, près du ciel et des étoiles, la fenêtre de la belle qui ouvre dans les feuillages verdoyants de mère Nature. Auteuil enrage et renâcle à souhait, dans l’économie, comme il sait si bien le faire, ce qui décuple sa dimension comique. Le sort de ce tyran solitaire, conservateur et obsessionnel, si bien servi en ridicule, se lit comme un hymne à la liberté en faveur de la femme.
