Désireux de transmettre au mieux la teneur du texte de Molière et d’offrir les conditions d’une « compréhension solide » de cette œuvre, Hubert Jappelle propose une mise en scène classique et sans afféteries des affres du triste Arnolphe, barbon imbécile qui croit que l’amour peut naître de la reconnaissance et que d’avoir rendu Agnès niaise lui ôtera le goût d’être déniaisée par un autre que lui… Convaincu que cette pièce pourtant célèbre n’est finalement quasi jamais donnée à voir et qu’il faut rendre à Molière la place qu’il mérite, y voyant un pamphlet toujours d’actualité contre la religion disciplinant les femmes pour mieux les séquestrer, les asservir et autoriser les mâles à en user à leur guise, Hubert Jappelle resitue la pièce dans son contexte historique et social, laissant au spectateur le loisir et la responsabilité d’établir « la relation avec notre temps ».
