Dans la salle de répétitions du Théâtre du Soleil, l’esprit des fondateurs se perpétue à travers le travail de jeunes compagnies. La compagnie Taf théâtre n’en est pas à son coup d’essai et si l’on retrouve au début des Légendes un décor en forme de café cabaret, des comédiens en costume d’époque qui s’affairent en musique à opérer des changements scénographiques à vue, ce ne sont pas les Naufragés du fol espoir qui attendent le spectateur mais une pièce à l’esthétique originale et personnelle qui associe intelligemment à la tradition mnouchkinienne d’un théâtre de troupe les audaces qu’on peut attendre de la jeunesse. La première d’entre toutes : une direction d’acteurs qui installe dans l’échange des répliques un rythme suspendu, d’une certaine lenteur, qui laisse les dialogues résonner et donne à l’histoire anecdotique toute l’épaisseur qui lui revient. Nous sommes dans la Vienne de l’entre-deux guerres qui peine à se relever de la défaite. Le spectre de la crise économique rode et les années folles se meurent sous l’autorité d’aînés à la fois bourgeois et décadents. Le soir même de ses fiançailles avec un homme qu’elle n’a pas choisi – le boucher d’à côté – la fille d’un commerçant quitte tout pour un marlou fan de turf, velléitaire et sincère, qui va lui faire un enfant.

Bien sûr, le contexte historique – la fermentation du drame qui s’annonce – assoit tout l’intérêt de cette histoire. On assiste impuissant aux agissements d’une génération de battus, tellement perdus qu’ils étouffent l’avenir entre leurs bras. L’action parcourt plusieurs années dans une dramaturgie cinématographique que la mise en scène rend avec fluidité. Entre un naturalisme pittoresque, qui dépeint le quotidien et les difficultés économiques de la petite bourgeoisie viennoise, et un traitement plus expressionniste, qui tourne parfois au burlesque, les comédiens rendent l’humanité pathétique d’un monde qui ne parvient plus à avancer. Ce feuilleton populaire joue sur les archétypes du genre : scènes de pique-nique, d’intérieur, de rue et de cabaret, et des personnages typés – la jeune femme romantique, le père autoritaire, le jeune homme lâche – auxquels le texte et l’interprétation offrent épaisseur et complexité. Après l’entracte, dans un cabaret coquin, le public se mêle aux acteurs qui exploitent parfaitement bien l’effet de la proximité. Encore un peu plus, le spectateur est emporté dans ce tourbillon de l’Histoire et d’une valse viennoise dont il pressent à tout moment qu’elles finiront par dérailler.
