Cet événement s’annonce comme une vraie fête. L’Egisto naît pratiquement en même temps que le genre que l’on a, par la suite, appelé « opéra ». Celui-ci n’a alors ni règles établies, ni forme figée. Dans ce contexte, les compositeurs de L’Egisto réalisent en toute liberté une oeuvre dont le mélange tragi-comique se révèle on ne peut plus actuel. On ne trouvera pas dans cette pièce de mythologie divine, ni de personnage héroïque, on y rencontrera plutôt des personnages issus de la Commedia dell’Arte ou des Italiens issus de la société de l’époque. Pour caractériser musicalement cet innovant patchwork, des chanteurs aux voix populaires côtoient des experts du chant lyrique. D’abord intitulé Chi soffre speri (Que celui qui souffre espère), L’Egisto est le premier opéra italien représenté en France. Sa liberté formelle donne à méditer bien au-delà de la sphère baroque.
