Dans cette production créée en 1989 à l’Opéra de Lyon et présentée récemment sur la scène de l’Athénée, le tandem de metteurs en scène que forment Patrice Caurier et Moshe Leiser s’empare de cette délicieuse et géniale fantaisie lyrique signée par un autre tandem : Maurice Ravel pour la musique et Colette pour le livret. Leur collaboration fut difficile voire orageuse mais le résultat est magistral : un ouvrage lyrique inclassable qui bouscule tous les codes du genre. L’enfant (créé en 1925 au Théâtre Casino de Monte-Carlo) s’organise autour d’une série de miniatures irrésistibles, morceaux de bravoure et de charme oscillant en permanence entre douceur et ironie. Ce « petit opéra » fait plonger le spectateur dans le monde de l’enfance, merveilleux et inquiétant à la fois, où les objets s’animent dans l’univers clos d’une chambre d’enfant. « L’Enfant et les sortilèges, plutôt qu’un opéra pour enfants, nous semble être un opéra sur l’enfance, sur ces heures particulières enfouies dans nos souvenirs les plus lointains où, plongé dans l’obscurité d’une chambre, caché sous une table, étouffé par une rêverie étrange, on entre dans un rapport personnel avec tous les objets, plantes et animaux qui nous entourent ; ici règnent la peur et la culpabilité », expliquent Patrice Caurier et Moshe Leiser. Cette production propose une version réduite (pour piano à quatre mains, flûtes et violoncelle, réalisée par Didier Puntos) de la partie orchestrale de l’ouvrage. Avec les voix de Gaëlle Le Roi (déjà applaudie dans le même rôle principal de l’enfant sur la scène de Garnier), Delphine Galou, Thomas Dolie, Sandrine Sutter, Simon Jaunin, Jean-Louis Meunier, Kareen Durand, Katia Velletaz.
