« Le génie n’est que l’enfance retrouvée à volonté. » écrivait Baudelaire dans Le Peintre de la vie moderne. Sans doute est-ce cette puissance d’étonnement face à la matière qui donne au plasticien Jephan de Villiers sa force d’invention. Modelant feuilles tombées, écorces aussi bien que bois morts ou champignons, son geste façonne la vie avec ces éléments organiques promis à la décomposition et crée un peuple chimérique étrangement vivant. Fasciné par cette œuvre, le metteur en scène Patrick Masset a arpenté les territoires d’enfance du sculpteur, longtemps perclus dans la solitude et la maladie, jusqu’au jour il se leva pour entrer dans le « monde des grands ». Sur la piste recouverte d’un manteau de tourbe, les huit artistes – circassiens de haute voltige, formés au Centre national des arts du cirque ou au Lido, marionnettiste et violoncelliste comédien -, donnent corps aux visions de cet enfant « malade », en proie aux hallucinations de la fièvre et des médicaments. Un enfant qui rêvait de s’échapper et trouva le chemin de son envol dans un élan d’imaginaire.

L’enfant qui, conception et mise en piste de Patrick Masset, du 8 au 28 juillet 2009, relâche lundi et jeudi, à 22h15 sous le chapiteau-dôme du T1J installé sur l’Ile Piot dans le cadre de "Midi Pyrénées fait son Cirque" en collaboration avec le Théâtre des Doms. Tél : 04 90 84 09 16.
