Publié en 1913, L’Envers du music-hall rassemble une vingtaine de textes brefs, récits, portraits, anecdotes prises sur le vif et inspirés à Colette par sa carrière de pantomime. L’écrivaine y raconte sa vie de troupe, l’itinéraire des tournées, l’errance de la misère, brossant un portrait sans complaisance de la société de son temps et de ses compagnons de route. « Des histoires », souligne la comédienne, « auxquelles Colette elle-même participe à la première personne du singulier, qu’elle se taise ou qu’elle parle ». Danièle Lebrun fait donc vivre sur scène toute une galerie de personnages en une quinzaine de tableaux et dans un décor minimaliste comme Marcel Bluwal aime les concevoir pour mieux rehausser le propos. La théâtralisation de ces chroniques en forme de monologue s’attache à respecter la lettre du texte : « Ce que j’espère avant tout, c’est que pour le public émerge de la représentation ce qui m’a moi-même fascinée : une Colette différente de la Colette un peu convenue des manuels ».
