Inlassable défenseur de la musique de son compatriote Samuel Barber (il dirige l’étincelant Nemanja Radulovicdans le Concerto pour violon), Leonard Slatkin est un interprète inspiré du répertoire britannique. Plus qu’un chef-d’œuvre, A Child of our Time est un miracle musical. Cet oratorio du xxe siècle, dont Michael Tippett entreprend la composition alors que vient d’éclater la Seconde Guerre mondiale, entretient au long de ses trois parties (pour une heure de musique) un parfait équilibre entre une forme se référant à Bach et Haendel et des emprunts, notamment, au répertoire des spirituals : l’irruption de « Nobody knows the trouble I see » ou « Go down, Moses » est ainsi d’une puissance dramatique insurpassable. Le lendemain au 104, un autre grand musicien pacifiste, Benjamin Britten, est au programme des solistes de l’Orchestre national de France (Quatuor n° 1 et Simple Symphony).
