Léonce et Léna est un hymne à la jeunesse, composé par Büchner, un homme
pressé, réfugié politique à Strasbourg, qui s’exerça ainsi en 1936 à répondre,
histoire de gagner trois cents florins, à un concours proposé dans La Gazette
d’Augsbourg avec une comédie en trois actes au lieu de deux ou un, et sans
respecter les délais fixés. Voilà pourquoi la pièce resta inédite jusqu’en 1850.
Une énigme aussi, que l’histoire de ces jeunes gens étudiants « gavés de
lecture pour qui le savoir, à travers la crise de conscience de l’idéalisme, est
devenu objet d’un doute », selon l’un des spécialistes de Büchner,
Jean-Louis Besson. Le prince Léonce connaît l’ennui ; on lui impose de plus, un
mariage dont il ne connaît pas la promise. Il s’enfuit avec Valério, un jeune
vagabond philosophe. Léna de son côté, n?accepte pas d’épouser un inconnu, elle
le confie à sa gouvernante. Finalement, les deux jeunes gens se trouveront
mariés de leur plein consentement, sans connaître leur identité. Un rêve.
