Pour dire adieu à L’Homme qui danse et ainsi mettre un terme à près de vingt-cinq années de confessions théâtrales, Philippe Caubère donne un nouveau rendez-vous à son fidèle et enthousiaste public. Un double rendez-vous, puisque La mort d’Avignon — qui ne devait initialement représenter que l’un des fragments d’un dernier volet en une seule partie — a grandi, s’est amplifiée, enrichie jusqu’à nécessiter l’ensemble d’une représentation, alternant de la sorte avec La Ficelle. Un peu comme si la « vrai fin » de cette épopée autofictionnelle n’avait eu, une fois encore, d’autre choix que de s’étirer, se distendre, se remplir à outrance pour ensuite déborder de suites de mots, d’incises digressives, de divagations lexicales, d’extravagances parodiques… Cette outrance allègre et exigeante, servie par une grande précision d’écriture, fait de l’art de Philippe Caubère un art de la profusion, de la sincérité et de l’investissement personnel. Un art qui découpe, au sein de ce dernier opus plus sombre que les précédents, des ombres assez touchantes.
Un besoin impérieux de remplir le vide de la scène
Car, tout commence par l’appréhension d’un vide. Le vide auquel le comédien doit faire face lorsque les figures derrière lesquelles il avait l’habitude de se réfugier s’effacent. Le vide du plateau de théâtre qu’il ne peut que remplir, comme pour ne pas sombrer. Le vide devant soi, avant que les textes n’aient été écrits, avant que la voie artistique ne se soit révélée. Et pour tenter de combler cette absence, l’acteur invente un monde. Partant d’un rien, une ficelle, il imagine une ville, un bar, une femme, puis revient au Lorenzaccio d’Otomar Krejca auquel il prit part, lors du Festival d’Avignon de 1979. Car après un premier épisode qui aurait peut-être gagné à se diriger de façon plus tranchante vers l’exploitation du désarroi, des troubles de l’artiste, La mort d’Avignon signe le retour plus lumineux des portraits pittoresques et excessifs qui font le succès de Philippe Caubère. Georges Wilson, Paul Puaux, Claudine et beaucoup d’autres passent ainsi sur scène dans une spirale qui va s’accélérant. Jusqu’à la lettre d’adieu de Philippe à son double Ferdinand, lettre emplie d’émotion et de solennité.
