Que reste-t-il du ludisme ou des blessures des répétitions lorsque l’on plonge dans la représentation ? La fragilité des comédiens sert-elle la sincérité des personnages ? Voici les questionnements que Sophie Lecarpentier et les membres de la compagnie Eulalie (compagnie créée en 1995, à Rouen, par la metteure en scène) ont souhaité explorer à travers ce nouveau spectacle en forme de diptyque qui enchâsse L’Epreuve de Marivaux à l’intérieur du Jour de l’italienne – pièce collective cherchant à révéler « l’envers du décor », « les affres des répétitions ». Lors de sa présentation au Théâtre 13 en avril 2009, cette tentative de vulgarisation théâtrale était loin de nous avoir enthousiasmés*. Aujourd’hui raccourcie et suivie de la comédie en un acte de Marivaux, cette nouvelle proposition, si elle révèle les mêmes aspects artificiels, paraît moins puérile et surtout moins vaine que le précédent spectacle. Car les interprètes de cette création à deux volets (Xavier Clion, Hélène Francisci, Vanessa Koutseff, Sophie Lecarpentier, Solveig Maupu, Emmanuel Noblet, Stéphane Brel et Julien Saada) composent une représentation de L’Epreuve pleine de justesse.
L’endroit et l’envers du décor
Une représentation de L’Epreuve qui prend ses distances avec l’esprit « comédie de café-théâtre » dans lequel baigne, de bout en bout, la première partie du spectacle. Il faut donc attendre une cinquantaine de (longues) minutes pour enfin sortir de ce Jour de l’italienne caricatural et en venir à Marivaux. Alors, comme par enchantement, des interprètes jusque-là sans éclat se mettent à incarner Lucidor, Angélique, Frontin, Madame Argante… de manière réellement pertinente. Un jeune homme fortuné, une jeune femme désargentée dont il décide d’éprouver l’amour avant de la demander en mariage, un valet jouant le rôle d’un riche héritier, une mère sur le point de renier sa fille. Sophie Lecarpentier plonge ses comédiens dans une temporalité contemporaine au sein de laquelle les enjeux de la comédie cruelle de Marivaux se dessinent de jolie façon. Ainsi, immergés que nous sommes dans la profondeur et la finesse de L’Epreuve, le retour en fin de spectacle au Jour de l’italienne fait l’effet d’un réveil en sursaut. Un réveil qui vient rappeler la plate réalité d’un projet qui n’aura finalement apporté aucune réponse aux interrogations sur l’art dramatique que se posent les membres de la compagnie normande.
