Grandi dans le creuset culturel de Marrakech, la ville où il a vu le jour, Aziz Sahmaoui s’inspire de l’esprit syncrétique des Gnaouas pour composer la bande-son originale de son University Of Gnawa. Cette drôle d’université, c’est en fait pour Aziz Sahmaoui une histoire qui remonte à l’enfance. Encore gamin, son père l’initie à la diversité musicale : le rock psychédélique de Nass El Ghiwane comme les merveilles mélodiques du chaâbi, les transes telluriques des confréries Gnaouas comme les mélopées extatiques du désert. Autant de musiques qu’une fois adulte, le Marocain unifie lorsqu’il choisit de traverser la Méditerranée en 1989, les métissant bien vite au jazz. Vingt ans et bien des expériences plus tard, à commencer par l’Orchestre National de Barbès puis le Joe Zawinul Syndicate, le chanteur a pu toutes les marier lors d’une résidence en février 2010 dans le grand Sud Marocain. Ce fut l’acte de naissance de ce projet qui fête aujourd’hui ses 10 ans.
