Gloria Paris considère Carlo Goldoni comme « un pur exemple de la culture italienne, qui fait se côtoyer intimement la tragédie et la comédie », qui crée « un espace de cohabitation, de contamination des genres comme, deux siècles après lui, Eduardo de Filippo ou Federico Fellini ». Aussi, est-ce assez instinctivement que la metteure en scène d’origine italienne investit Les Amoureux en associant accents cocasses et reflets dramatiques, en installant une forme de clair-obscur affectif qui rejoint les états d’âme d’adolescents lunatiques et possessifs, de jeunes amoureux pouvant rire de sujets graves et pleurer à cause de broutilles. « La “loupe” de Goldoni se pose sur cette partie obscure du désir qui s’appelle la possession de l’autre », explique Gloria Paris. « Dès qu’ils s’éloignent (…), dès qu’ils sont obligés d’avoir une relation sociale, [Eugenia et Fulgenzio] sont rattrapés par des schémas de comportements conventionnels qu’ils ne maîtrisent pas. Le mélodrame flirte avec la tragédie et seule la comédie, aussi amère soit-elle, devient la promesse d’une salutaire catharsis. »
De la commedia dell’arte à la comédie de mœurs
S’éloignant progressivement des archétypes de la commedia dell’arte, Carlo Goldoni opère une révolution dramaturgique en abandonnant le principe du canevas au profit de pièces entièrement écrites, en faisant disparaître les masques pour révéler les visages des comédiens. Les Amoureux s’affirme ainsi comme une véritable comédie de mœurs fondée sur l’observation de la société vénitienne du XVIIIème siècle. « Goldoni a écrit une pièce centrée sur les figures de la jeune première et du jeune premier », précise la metteure en scène. « Il est donc parti du schéma traditionnel de la commedia dell’arte, mais l’a déplacé, l’a remanié, pour opérer un glissement vers la peinture de caractères. » Ici, aucun père abusif ne vient contrarier de son autorité parentale la relation impétueuse et irrationnelle qu’entretiennent Eugenia et Fulgenzio. Ce sont les seuls égarements intimes de ces deux personnages qui remettent en cause leur projet de mariage. Les seuls égarements d’une adolescence narcissique, excessive, déraisonnable et profondément portée vers l’insoluble.
