« C’est quoi votre Graal ? ». La question, tirée à bout portant dès les premières mesures, trotte dans les esprits en suivant le long cheminement de ces curieux Arpenteurs… Que cherchent-ils donc à travers leurs pérégrinations alambiquées ? Suivant les traces de Méchain et Delambre, astronomes chargés en 1792 par l’Assemblée constituante de mesurer le méridien de Paris pour en déduire la mesure exacte du mètre universel « valable en tout temps, pour tous les peuples », nos sept aventuriers ont à leur tour parcouru le méridien entre Dunkerque et Barcelone pour mener leurs propres expériences du voyage, ponctuées d’incidents et d’inattendus soigneusement notés, enregistrés. Cofondateur avec Corinne Miret de la Revue éclair, Stéphane Olry a collecté ces histoires rapportées par chacun autour d’une « Table Ronde » chevaleresque. Dans le rôle de « L’auteur » (et directeur de compagnie), il consigne ces comptes-rendus dans son journal, qu’il ponctue de commentaires intimes et observations sur les relations de travail au sein de la troupe ou sur les conditions de production actuelles.
Un théâtre documentaire « poétique »
C’est à partir de cette matière composite que s’est construite la pièce. Descriptions factuelles, récits d’expérience, dialogues imaginaires, rêveries… tout se mélange sur le plateau. On passe ainsi d’une explication détaillée des mésaventures de Méchain et Delambre, pris dans les troubles de l’Histoire révolutionnaire et les affres de la véracité scientifique, à une séance de « zoophonie », d’une séparation poignante entre un camping-car et un arpenteur aux engueulades entre le budget bégayeur et un écureuil performeur revendicatif. Car les choses et les bêtes ont aussi la parole. Le paysage se construit par accumulations d’objets figurant naïvement le territoire, comme dans les dessins enfantins. Peu à peu le plateau se transforme en une maquette géante où les protagonistes tantôt viennent restituer des bribes de leurs expéditions, tantôt jouent les délires de l’imagination. Tel théâtre, qui se raconte en tant que théâtre en train de se faire, exige une partition, une mise en scène et un jeu plus élaborés. Tout ici est bavard, complaisant et démonstratif, malgré quelques heureux traits l’humour et pointes ironiques. Ce spectacle laborieux se perd dans les anecdotes et cherche encore sa forme.
