Théâtre 71 / d’Euripide / adaptation et mes Sara Llorca
Fils de Zeus et de Sémélé, Dionysos est, par sa mère, descendant du grand Cadmos, le fondateur de Thèbes. Il revient dans sa ville natale pour y imposer son culte. Mais Penthée, qui règne sur la cité, refuse d’écouter et d’honorer celui qui a caché ses traits divins sous une figure humaine. La vengeance du dieu est terrible : les femmes de la cité, qu’il a rendues délirantes, partent dans la montagne pour se livrer à l’orgie. Penthée décide d’affronter le fauteur de trouble aux rites barbares.
Sagesse des fous et folie des sages
Malgré les deux millénaires qui nous séparent de l’œuvre d’Euripide, « ses enjeux résonnent de façon saisissante », remarque Sara Llorca : « folie meurtrière commandée par un dieu, méfiance vis-à-vis de l’étranger, place des femmes dans la cité, aveuglement, limites de notre humanité ». Anne Alvaro joue Dionysos : « sa puissance naturelle, sa présence éclairent la nature ambiguë du dieu aux traits d’homme ». Face à elle, se tient Ulrich N’Toyo, dans le rôle de Penthée, le roi brutal et arrogant qui découvrira à ses dépens que sous le masque de l’étranger, peut se cacher le visage du dieu. La mise en scène s’appuie « sur une esthétique à la fois organique et technologique » et offre l’occasion d’une création sonore imaginative et originale.
