Ecrite en 1902, créée la même année par Constantin Stanislavski au Théâtre d’Art de Moscou, Les Bas-fonds est une œuvre vigoureusement inscrite dans son époque. Répercutant les troubles économiques et sociaux qui touchèrent la Russie au début du XXème siècle — événements qui aboutirent à la Révolution de 1905 —, la pièce de Maxime Gorki fait « le procès d’une réalité qui dégrade l’homme », appelle l’être humain « à se mobiliser pour la lutte de tous contre un système qui [le] mutile et [l’]avilit ». Cela à travers le tableau d’une communauté de marginaux hiérarchisée qui reproduit, dans son monde des bas-fonds, les errances ayant amené tous ces individus à sortir du champ social : violences, cruautés, intolérances… « La société que dépeint Gorki au début du XXème siècle ressemble étrangement à ce début de XXIème siècle », observe Lucile Cocito en pointant du doigt des« rapports individuels toujours et partout empoisonnés par une constante et inutile hostilité de tous contre tous ».
Un appel impérieux à la lutte
« Par-delà l’envie et l’intérêt personnels », ajoute la metteure en scène, « monter Les bas-fonds (…) m’est apparu comme une nécessité, une évidence, une réponse face au monde actuel ». Une réponse qui n’a pourtant pas pour dessein « de dénoncer les tares de la société, mais plutôt de s’interroger avec les spectateurs sur la réalité de la vie et la facilité avec laquelle on peut porter des jugements, souvent non réfléchis sur l’autre, sur les différences qui nous [font] peur ». Car Les Bas-fonds place l’être humain au centre de ses interrogations, de ses réflexions et de ses intrigues. Mêlant texte, musique (Le Sacre du printemps d’Igor Stravinski) et danse (la chorégraphie est de Shaula Cambazzu), Lucile Cocito envisage le théâtre comme un art du présent susceptible de questionner les citoyens d’aujourd’hui. « L’espoir peut nous faire vivre », dit Gorki, « mais quant à la possibilité réelle de s’en sortir, c’est à nous, lecteurs d’aujourd’hui et spectateurs de demain, d’en définir le chemin ».
