Après avoir mis en œuvre un théâtre de l’intime infiniment sensible, explorant sans pathos et dans une juste distance des thématiques souvent tues, Vincent Ecrepont croise avec cette œuvre faussement légère les sphères familiales et sociales. Portrait au vitriol aussi domestique que politique, cette pièce de Boris Vian, écrite en 1957 en pleine Guerre d’Algérie, met en scène une forme de tragédie burlesque, éclairant le destin d’une famille bourgeoise apparemment normale, mais rongée par la peur et le surgissement d’un refoulé violent. Ce refoulé a un nom : le Schmürz, pivot même de la pièce, créature silencieuse torturée et assignée à un grotesque anonymat. Le père courageux, la mère dévouée, Zénobie la fille sentimentale, Cruche la bonne, et le Schmürz, miroir d’une société capable d’une effarante inhumanité : tous vivent sous le même toit, et déménagent dans un espace de plus en plus restreint, chaque fois que le « Bruit » qui monte les effraie. Pour le metteur en scène, le Schmürz est « un blessé de guerre autant qu’une figure de l’opprimé ou du migrant », et ce théâtre de l’absurde s’active comme une machine à rire autant qu’à penser le monde, en posant question.
