Rilke le voyageur a séjourné à plusieurs reprises à Paris, il fut secrétaire de Rodin, alors adulé, et sa correspondance avec « le maître » révèle son admiration autant que d’âpres questionnements sur la création artistique. Le poète mit plus de cinq ans à rédiger ces Cahiers, publiés en 1910, qui s’articulent autour de la figure du jeune poète Malte Laurids Brigge, autour des souffrances et des failles de l’existence, dans un Paris de misère et de violence. Le cocon de l’enfance est loin, et la mort rôde. Le “roman“ est peuplé de figures familiales, surtout féminines, et de fantômes, qui indiquent « un mode d’être, un état limite, hésitant toujours entre le dedans et le dehors, l’être et le non-être, l’existence et l’évanouissement. » Quel rôle joue l’écriture dans la traversée qu’effectue Malte, et pour l’auteur même ? La réponse est intérieure, à chercher au plus profond de soi dans une irrémédiable solitude. Dans une lettre à sa chère amie Lou Andréas Salomé, Rilke confie que l’écriture des Cahiers a un peu joué pour lui le rôle d’une psychanalyse : « ce personnage, constitué en partie de mes dangers, sombre pour m’épargner en quelque sorte de sombrer moi-même ». Bérengère Dautun adapte et met en scène les Cahiers, qu’elle interprète avec Guillaume Bienvenu, comme « un combat entre deux mondes, celui que Rilke a perdu, vaste et merveilleux, et celui auquel il doit s’adapter, âpre et étroit ».
