Les Carnets de Malte Laurids Brigge mettent en scène Malte, un jeune Danois tourmenté, contraint par les déplacements de sa famille à un exil qu’il ressent socialement comme négatif et dégradant. C’est aussi le portrait angoissé d’un solitaire qui perd pied avec la réalité. Si Malte s’attache volontiers aux sentiments amoureux, il ne vit lui-même aucune passion. Sa seule interlocutrice véritable est Abelone, la jeune sœur de sa mère. On a souvent rapproché le héros narrateur des Cahiers de leur auteur Rilke : même adresse à Paris, mêmes voyages, mêmes lectures, même conception pessimiste de l’amour. Leur enfance est semblable, soumise à l’attrait du monde maternel, la nostalgie et le sentiment du vide. C’est à Rome en 1904 que Rilke, âgé de dix-neuf ans, commence à rédiger son récit dont la publication ne verra le jour qu’en 1910. Le poète, attiré par l’art, est à Paris le secrétaire de Rodin. Dans une lettre adressée à son amie Lou Andreas-Salomé, il expose le projet d’écrire une monographie sur Carpaccio, après l’achèvement de son livre sur Rodin. Mais si l’on considère l’état du narrateur des Cahiers, son moralest au plus bas, frayant avec la présence menaçante de la mort, de la pauvreté et de la folie. Il paraît bien difficile ainsi d’envisager un avenir lourd de promesses.
Il revient à chacun de dépasser la détresse d’avoir perdu le paradis de l’enfance.
L’amour encore n’échappe pas à la méfiance, un sentiment plein de vanité puisqu’il sépare davantage les êtres au lieu de les rapprocher : « Etre aimé signifie se consumer et c’est périr. Aimer, c’est briller comme une flamme d’une huile inépuisable, c’est durer. » L’image accordée à ces mystérieux Cahiers est celle du kaléidoscope, un jeu miroitant et changeant de sensations, de souvenirs, de réflexions et de lectures. Il revient à chacun de dépasser la détresse d’avoir perdu le paradis de l’enfance. Comment ? Peut-être quand il s’agit du poète, en faisant usage de l’écriture qui sonde l’être en profondeur et sait le reconstruire en l’inscrivant dans l’expérience de la vie. Les architectes de cette existence en quête d’elle-même sont sur le plateau Guillaume Bienvenu dans le rôle de Malte et Bérangère Dautun, son guide féminin. L’actrice à l’allure tchekhovienne représente la grâce et la sagesse, la sœur mature à l’écoute des questionnements de coeur du jeune homme. Avec un air désuet, les Cahiers de Malte Laurids Brigge restituent pleinement sur la scène ce mélange inextricable d’états d’âme qui habitent l’être fragile en devenir, à la fois lucide et excessivement sensible. Belle rencontre.
