« On a peur d’une image de la décrépitude qui réduit l’existence à un vagissement sans évolution, depuis le berceau jusqu’à la mort. Or, cette image terrifiante, Ionesco l’a découverte et nous la fait découvrir par des moyens proprement scéniques. A un homme qui se met à nu avec un tel courage, on doit au moins le respect. » Le metteur en scène Philippe Adrien cite ce commentaire d’Arthur Adamov, émis lorsque la pièce parut (1952) et fit scandale. Aujourd’hui encore, la radicalité de ce texte étonne, et demeure un défi qui peut effrayer ! Ionesco évoquait à propos de son rapport à l’univers « un sentiment déchirant de l’extrême fragilité, précarité, du monde ». Le metteur en scène a monté ce projet avec la compagnie du 3e Œil, dirigée par Bruno Netter, devenu aveugle dans sa jeunesse. Ensemble, ils ont déjà créé de très beaux spectacles, dont un fameux Malade Imaginaire et un Œdipe remarquablement maîtrisé. Sur le plateau, une maison aux murs circulaires, gris sombre, une maison de phare sur une île du bout du monde. Une sorte d’antre intérieure, mentale, lisse, carcérale, isolée de tout, le tout étant ici bien proche du rien, ce qui a de quoi donner le vertige… Y règne une sorte de temps sans temps, d’espace sans espace, de langage sans signification logique, de présence au monde sans lien au réel, ou si peu. Y vit un couple de vieux – soixante-quinze ans de vie commune. La scène est habitée d’une monotonie ressassée, que la vieillesse et l’approche inéluctable de la mort accompagnent comme un fardeau et un naufrage. Excessivement grimés, comme empoussiérés de cette poudre blanche et cadavérique, presque au bout de la course de leur vie modeste, le Vieux et la Vieille discutent… Parfois rires et larmes se confondent.
Muette éloquence
« Plus on va et plus on s’enfonce » dit le Vieux. La comédienne sourde Monica Companys interprète la Vieille avec une rare présence, émouvante et délicate (« mon chou » sussurre-t-elle avec une jolie pointe d’étrangeté dans la diction). C’est elle qui « tient » le couple, qui l’ancre dans une forme de réel. Alexis Rangheard parvient à donner au Vieux une infinie fragilité, qui parfois s’efface pour des revirements impétueux. Bientôt le couple accueille une foule d’invités pour leur délivrer un message essentiel, la Vieille s’affaire et installe les chaises. Ces interlocuteurs imaginaires arrivent petit à petit, la scène se remplit de chaises vides, uniformes, et cette progressive accumulation figure admirablement le néant et la perte. A la fin l’Orateur (Bruno Netter), censé expliquer le message du couple, intervient de sa muette éloquence… Philippe Adrien laisse voir une tendresse à la fois évidente et dérisoire entre les Vieux, comme si quelque part comptait le poids d’un passé vécu ensemble, la trace d’une complicité aussi vieille qu’eux. Avec une adéquate économie de moyens, le metteur en scène soigne le portrait du couple, jusqu’à une décrépitude expressionniste, mais il dessine très finement leur relation, leur “être-ensemble“, leur “être-au-monde“ malgré tout, il met en valeur leur combat insignifiant et immense, et cela est beau.
