Le Verdict, La Métamorphose, Dans la colonie pénitentiaire : les trois textes que Kafka souhaitait voir réunis en une « Trilogie des châtiments » ont pris au cours du xxe siècle une valeur prémonitoire. L’observation des rapports humains y est digne d’un travail d’entomologiste. Cependant, l’art de l’écrivain tient dans sa capacité à renverser les perspectives, à faire accepter l’absurde par son lecteur. Le sérieux n’exclut pas la fantaisie – et c’est ce que l’on pourrait dire aussi de la musique de Brice Pauset comme des mises en scène de David Lescot, décidément très inspiré pour ses collaborations lyriques. « Ce que nous visons, et que la musique de Brice Pauset, à la fois mentale et imagée, permet de créer, c’est un ensemble de représentations si frappantes qu’elles provoquent le rire de la surprise. Et cette surprise est celle que nous devrions ressentir face à notre propre condition. Pour représenter Kafka, je crois qu’il faut être littéral, montrer les choses, non pas essayer de les abstraire ou de les occulter. C’est le parti pris de cette mise en scène, qui mêle le burlesque au tragique : toucher un réalisme qui ne soit pas celui des apparences, mais des réalités cachées. » explique le metteur en scène.
