C’est dans le cadre des commémorations du quatre-vingt-dixième anniversaire de la bataille de Verdun que le Conseil Général de la Meuse a passé commande d’un texte à Aziz Chouaki. Un texte à travers lequel l’écrivain algérien (résidant en France depuis 1991) a souhaité porter un regard sur la participation des soldats nord-africains à la Première Guerre mondiale. Cela en mettant en perspective l’histoire du monde colonial, et plus spécialement l’histoire des 132 ans de présence française en Algérie. Ainsi sont nés Les Coloniaux, un monologue aux inflexions humoristiques et politiques qui s’attache à narrer « la vraie version des aventures de Mohand-Akli dans la bataille de Verdun, ou comment, sur ordre d’un figuier multimédia, un petit berger kabyle va se retrouver troufion de traviole à diriger la bataille uniquement parce que Les Pieds Nickelés sont de la partie ». Tout est dit. Donnant naissance à une langue luxuriante, imagée, une langue qui semble vouloir engendrer – sans pour cela y parvenir – une forme de poésie du quotidien et du bariolage lexical, le spectacle interprété par Hammou Graïa (accompagné, sur scène, par l’auteur jouant de la guitare) ne réussit malheureusement pas à échapper aux pièges du folklore et de l’anecdotique.
Un regard porté sur les rapports Nord/Sud
Ce constat est d’autant plus déplaisant à établir qu’il est impossible de douter de la sincérité de cette proposition. Poursuivant depuis plusieurs années un valeureux travail de théâtre citoyen, Jean-Louis Martinelli a en effet inscrit les questionnements sur les relations Nord/Sud au cœur de son projet pour Nanterre. Mais, contrairement au remarquable Mitterrand et Sankara* (pièce de Jacques Jouet mise en scène, la saison dernière, par le directeur des Amandiers), les aventures fantaisistes de Mohand-Akli s’ensablent rapidement dans les lourdeurs d’un écrit qui, peinant à s’affirmer comme un objet artistique, ne fait finalement que poser la question du théâtre de commande. N’est-il pas illusoire de croire à un tel cadre d’écriture ? A l’écoute de ces Coloniaux, on se prend à penser que si. Car ce monologue laisse apparaître tous les contours, tous les virages et les artifices d’un texte incapable de transcender son cahier des charges. Il se révèle ainsi bien difficile de se laisser convaincre par le monde onirico-oriental élaboré par Aziz Chouaki. Un monde pourtant joyeux, évidemment sympathique, mais qui manque d’envergure et d’imprévu.
