Amélie Nothomb revendique implicitement son amour des lettres, tenu à distance dans la confrontation triviale avec le quotidien de la vie. Cette œuvre porte la griffe d’un humour élégant et d’une ironie caustique, ne serait-ce qu’en considérant les titres des deux premiers romans, Hygiène de l’assassin et Le Sabotage amoureux. Quant aux Combustibles, ils font directement allusion, non pas au tas de vieux papiers jetés dans le poêle, ni aux mauvaises herbes dans le jardin, ni aux bûches dans la cheminée, mais bien aux livres dont la propriété est de brûler et de s’enflammer facilement pour produire de la chaleur, quand on a froid et faim dans des temps barbares de guerre. Montesquieu voit dans l’étude le souverain remède contre les dégoûts de la vie, une heure de lecture chassant le chagrin. Mais qu’advient-il quand il faut se défaire de ces outils existentiels de survie physique ? Sur le plateau, s’installe une situation de dernière extrémité dans le logement d’un professeur d’université (Michel Boy), rejoint par son assistant (Grégory Gerreboo) et la petite amie de celui-ci (Julie Turin). L’enjeu est de taille pour ces intellectuels désabusés et cyniques qui n’attendent rien de l’autre, sinon la contradiction dans les débats, pourvoyeuse d’énergie et donc de chaleur.
Le désir onirique de feu et de flammes, de vie et d’élans s’élance
Faut-il brûler ou non les livres en question et comment en répertorier la juste valeur quand la mort guette ? Rapports de pouvoir et de hiérarchie, rêves cachés de promotion et de valorisation de carrière, basses rivalités amoureuses, ce sont de vains thèmes récurrents, acculés à la disparition. La jeune fille ne peut se départir du Bal de l’observatoire que le professeur méprisait en cours, une histoire d’amour petite-bourgeoise. En fait, tout est beau dans ce roman, le langage de séduction qu’on se renvoie« comme une balle en soie. » Dans la mise en scène de Stéphane Cottin, le désir onirique de feu et de flammes, de vie et d’élans s’élance à travers des intermèdes dansés, tango et corrida. C’est la note intense de rougeoiement décisif, révélatrice d’un vif incendie intérieur. Michel Boy assume pleinement son art de la scène en jouant son rôle de sage approximatif avec une fougue communicative. On entend le Capitaine Fracasse de Théophile Gautier : « Le comédien doit être froid en brûlant les planches et rester tranquille au milieu des grandes furies. » Le feu crépite sur le plateau avec la force sereine dégagée par le professeur, amoureux des idées et des jeunes filles en fleurs.
