Le dernier ouvrage (resté inachevé) d’Offenbach est un opéra d’inspiration fantastique tiré de trois histoires de l’écrivain allemand E.T.A. Hoffmann qui devient le personnage central de l’opéra : Der Sandmann, Rat Krespel et Das verlorene Spiegelbild. Un triple portrait de femmes pour mieux mettre en scène la quête insatiable et l’incapacité du poète à rencontrer l’amour… Olivier Desbordes a choisi la première version de l’opéra, celle qui rétablit les dialogues parlés et dans laquelle la même soprano incarne les quatre rôles féminins de l’ouvrage : ici la très sous-estimée Isabelle Philippe, tour à tour Giulette, Antonia, Olympia et Stella. Avec les Choeur et orchestre d’Opéra Eclaté et Dominique Trottein pour la direction musicale.
