Incapable pour des raisons de santé d’honorer la commande de l’Académie Royale, Gluck confia en 1784 la composition des Danaïdes à son élève Salieri. Le sujet hautement dramatique évoque les cinquante filles de Danaüs, enjointes par leur père à assassiner leurs époux respectifs durant la nuit de noce. Seule Hypermnestre se refuse à tuer Lyncée. Pour ce rôle de tragédienne, il faut un chant « large, dramatique, passionné » selon les termes de Berlioz, qui en fera son modèle dans Les Troyens. La version de concert dirigée par Christophe Rousset paraîtra au disque en comblant une lacune importante, dans un style et une exhaustivité des récitatifs propres à rendre justice à cette tragédie lyrique, dans la lignée d’Orphée et d’Alceste.
