« Il ne s’agit pas d’une adaptation mais bien de la transposition sur scène du suc de la nouvelle » dit Lionel Dray à propos de son récit de la « vie inutile, sans passé ni futur » de Jean Dézert, « une vie au présent qui vibre de l’enthousiasme du supplicié ». Monsieur Dézert est comme un clown poussiéreux et rapiécé, attendrissant et absurde, « de ceux qu’il est agréable de voir dans la situation la plus désastreuse possible ». Sa vie est morne, son quotidien est sans surprises, ses ambitions sans éclats et même la mort risque de ne pas l’étonner. Pourtant cet invisible, enfant de Gogol et de Grock, qui « vadrouille dans ces jours comme une putain dans un monde sans trottoirs » devient objet de toutes les attentions, puisque Lionel Dray met ses aventures en scène en imaginant qu’une audition propose d’adapter la nouvelle de La Ville de Mirmont au cinéma. Qui saura se montrer à la hauteur du vide sidéral qu’est l’existence de Monsieur Dézert ?
