Paris, 1928, boulevard du Crime. Bercée par le frémissement de la rumeur du soir, une femme fend la foule : Garance. Celle qui chavire les âmes, celle qui nouera son destin aux cœurs de Baptiste Debureau et Frédérick Lemaître. Ainsi vont Les Enfants du paradis (1945), dans le film de Marcel Carné. Plus d’un demi-siècle plus tard, José Martinez arpente à son tour le chef-d’œuvre et le rêve en ballet. L’idée vient de Brigitte Lefèvre, bouillonnante directrice de la danse à l’Opéra de Paris. Un défi, tant le film a laissé son empreinte dans nos regards…. « Je l’ai découpé au scalpel ! , explique le danseur étoile, entre deux séances de répétition. Je voulais en saisir toutes les nuances et les rythmes. Le scénario de Jacques Prévert est très chorégraphié, car scandé par des mouvements de foule et des séquences plus intimes, des duos ou des trios. Le ballet suit la trame narrative et les personnages du film. Pour autant, je ne cherche pas surtout pas à le reproduire sur scène, mais à le transposer à travers les souvenirs de Jean-Baptiste. »
Des costumes signés par la danseuse étoile Agnès Letestu
Evitant toute reconstitution muséale, José Martinez joue de la mise en abîme du théâtre et des effets de couleurs. « Pour la narration, j’ai travaillé sur la simultanéité des plans et le cadrage par la lumière qu’autorise le plateau, raconte-t-il en montrant les dessins de la scénographie. Les costumes d’Agnès Letestu, danseuse étoile qui révèle ici un autre talent, soulignent le contraste entre les scènes quotidiennes, en noir et blanc, et les passages de pantomime, en technicolor. Quant à la danse, elle mélange plusieurs registres pour se faire vecteur des émotions et de l’histoire, alternant les tableaux où la foule de 65 danseurs grouille à l’unisson et les sensuels pas de deux sur pointes. Cette diversité répond à celle de la musique, composée par Marc-Olivier Dupin, qui mélange des effluves de bal musette, des airs de cabaret d’époque, des élans romantiques et des lignes plus abstraites… Une partition emplie de cette douceur enfuie, de cette gaieté déchirée qui danse dans le tourbillon des amours inaccessibles.
