Le compositeur Philip Glass, maître de la musique minimaliste et répétitive américaine, entretient un lien très privilégié avec l’œuvre cinématographique de Jean Cocteau qui lui a inspiré la composition de trois opéras-films dont Orphée en 1993, et La belle et la bête en 1994. Sa version des Enfants terribles (1996) s’appuie sur une partition conçue pour 3 pianos électriques et 4 voix solistes, venant en remplacement de la musique originale et des dialogues parlés. Paul Desveaux, qui dirige la Compagnie Héliotrope, signe la mise en scène de cette nouvelle production avec la complicité de la chorégraphe Yano Latridès et des lumières de Joël Hourbeigt. « Par ses reprises de thèmes, ses accents violents, et en contrepoint, la forme ténue de trois pianos pour un opéra, la musique de Philip Glass est aussi névrosée que l’œuvre de Jean Cocteau. Elle a la légèreté des choses fragiles mais précieuses. Elle a une certaine mélancolie aux accents de gaîté. Elle collectionne les petits objets musicaux comme ces enfants terribles qui amassent dans leur chambre les choses insolites. » confie le metteur en scène. Avec les voix solistes de Muriel Ferraro, Myriam Zekaria, Jean-Baptiste Dumora et Paul Crémazy.
