L’œuvre lyrique de Philip Glass est décidément à l’honneur en ce début d’année : après la création française de Hydrogen Jukebox (sur des poèmes d’Allen Ginsberg) à Nantes par l’ensemble Ars Nova, après les représentations de Dans la colonie pénitentiaire d’après Kafka à Lyon et en tournée, voici à l’Athénée Les Enfants terribles, adapté de Cocteau. Paul Desveaux, qui met en scène ce « dance opera » pour quatre solistes et trois pianos composé en 1996, rapproche ainsi le style du compositeur de celui du poète : « Par ses reprises de thèmes, ses accents violents, et en contrepoint, la forme ténue de trois pianos pour un opéra, la musique de Philip Glass est aussi névrosée que l’œuvre de Jean Cocteau. Elle a la légèreté des choses fragiles mais précieuses. Elle collectionne les petits objets musicaux comme ces enfants terribles qui amassent dans leur chambre les choses insolites ».
