Ils attendent, sur le plateau, que le public s’installe. L’un et l’autre accoutrés de ce que l’on devine être des costumes traditionnels roumains. Sur fond de musique folklorique, entre les murs d’un espace blanc quasi vide. Anne-Laure Liégeois (qui signe mise en scène et scénographie) a prévu le strict minimum pour encadrer la performance d’Olivier Dutilloy et Agnès Pontier, comédiens qui se glissent avec humour dans la peau de Nicolae et Elena Ceaușescu. De la naissance des deux futurs tyrans, en 1918 et 1916, sur les terres rurales de la Valachie, jusqu’au jour de Noël 1989 où le couple fut fusillé à l’issue d’un procès expéditif, ce sont les principaux évènements d’une (ir)résistible ascension que présente Les Epoux, fruit d’une commande passée par Anne-Laure Liégeois au dramaturge David Lescot. Elle propose un spectacle qui emprunte la voie du loufoque tout en se laissant rattraper, comme par éclairs, par l’effroi que provoquent le souvenir et les images d’archives du régime mis en place par « Les Ceaușescu ». Dans la peau de ce couple à la fois ridicule et monstrueux, Agnès Pontier et Olivier Dutilloy font mouche. Ils donnent corps, avec beaucoup de liberté, aux accents burlesques de cette tragi-comédie historique.
