Ezra est un jeune poète qui vit avec ses parents et son oncle Jean, l’idiot du village qui peint des totems en bois. Le jour où la mère d’Ezra meurt, pendant que l’oncle construit le cercueil et que le père jardinier arrange les fleurs, Ezra doit rédiger l’oraison funèbre. Mais il perd ses mots. Ezra décide alors qu’il est temps de quitter ses proches et part dans la nuit du monde. Avec cette pièce baroque qui mêle les codes théâtraux, les univers poétiques et les temporalités, Simon Falguières questionne sa place de créateur, guidé par l’interrogation d’Hölderlin : « A quoi bon des poètes en des temps de détresse ? » A travers ce conte merveilleux, on suit Ezra dans son voyage immobile et métaphysique jusqu’aux retrouvailles avec les mots et la redécouverte de ses proches, eux aussi beaucoup changés pendant cette fantastique odyssée.
