Un opéra de Wagner donné en création scénique en France, tel est le dernier « coup » du directeur du Théâtre du Châtelet, Jean-Luc Choplin. Pour interpréter Les Fées, il a fait appel à un chef aujourd’hui aussi à l’aise dans Rameau que dans Offenbach : Marc Minkowski. A la tête des Musiciens du Louvre, il retrouvera les couleurs originales de ce « grand opéra romantique » composé en 1888. Le livret, écrit d’après Carlo Gozzi, au fantastique des plus pittoresques, sera mis en scène par Emilio Sagi, ancien directeur artistique du Teatro Real de Madrid, adepte de spectacles aussi colorés que rythmés. La distribution comprend des fidèles du Châtelet, comme Laurent Alvaro, Nicolas Testé ou Judith Gauthier, sans oublier Laurent Naouri ou Salomé Haller. Au final, pas mal de « baroqueux » pour restituer le charme oublié de ce trésor de jeunesse du Maître de Bayreuth.
